A Creative Sanctuary

Located in downtown Squamish right next to the Estuary the Sound Mill is a place for artists, musicians and the community to come together. Having the space to create is always a challenge for the artist and musician. This community arts facility gives people the space to create, practice and perform on a larger scale with tools and equipment that they might not normally have access to in an environment that is supportive and encouraging of their pursuits. Kind of like a crazy art/music school run by the artists themselves. A main focus is on community outreach. We plan to have regular art openings showcasing the members artwork created here. We will also have music events featuring world music, experimental electronic music, invented instruments and percussive theatre. Members of the collective will also regularly put on workshops; children’s art workshops, jewellery making workshops, mural painting workshops, family percussion workshops, advanced percussion workshops, to name a few. Members can join and pay a monthly fee for access to the facilities and the community at large can drop in for free to observe the continually evolving art production and pay a small fee to participate in the many workshops and public events. Hopefully it will be a fun and inclusive playground were unusual and unaccepted people can come together to change both themselves and the greater Squamish society.

William Wallace spend many years singlehandedly welding, insulating, drywalling and painting the 12 permanent cargo containers on site into a habitable space. As soon as the outer shell of the building is built the space will be converted into a community arts facility run by the non-for-profit Sound Mill Society. Below are some photos of the building in different stages of construction.
